A Personal Note from Adam Bellfy: Properly Grease Your Boat Lift Cables for a Smooth Boating Season

Gloved hands apply lubricant from a can onto a metal boat lift cable against a watery background. White paste is visible on the glove and cable.

Hello from Bellfy Aquatic Engineering!

As the season shifts and we start thinking about getting our boats ready for the water, I wanted to take a moment to talk to you directly about something that’s often overlooked: properly greasing your boat lift cables.

As the owner of Bellfy Aquatic Engineering, I’ve seen first-hand how proper maintenance—especially with something as crucial as your boat lift cables—can make all the difference in keeping your equipment running smoothly year after year. Taking care of your boat lift now means it will be ready to go when the warm weather arrives, and I want to help you make sure your lift is in top shape.

How to Properly Grease Your Boat Lift Cables: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Gather the Right Tools: First things first, you'll need a grease gun (manual or pneumatic), marine-grade grease (make sure it’s designed to handle water exposure), and a clean rag for wiping away old grease and dirt. If you have a cable grease applicator, it can help ensure an even application along the cables.

  2. Inspect the Cables: Before greasing, inspect your cables closely for any signs of wear or fraying. This is key! If you notice anything that looks worn or compromised, it’s best to replace the cable before the boating season begins.

  3. Find the Grease Fittings: Take a look at the manual for your lift, and locate the grease fittings along the cables. These are often located at the sheaves or at the points where the cables attach to the winch or pulleys. Some lifts have grease fittings, others may need manual application of grease along the cable.

  4. Clean the Cables and Fittings: Wipe off the old grease, dirt, and debris from the cables and fittings using a clean rag. This step ensures that the new grease adheres properly and isn’t contaminated by dirt or debris.

  5. Grease the Cables: Now it’s time to grease! Attach your grease gun to the fittings and apply grease directly into the sheaves or along the cables. If you don’t have fittings, you can manually rub grease onto the cable, making sure to coat it evenly. Don’t forget to get all parts of the cable, especially where there’s the most friction.

  6. Run the Lift Up and Down: Once you’ve applied the grease, run your boat lift up and down a few times. This helps spread the grease evenly throughout the cables and pulleys. You’ll also be able to hear if something’s off, such as unusual noises that might indicate something else needs attention.

  7. Wipe Off Excess Grease: After running the lift, use your rag to wipe off any excess grease. Too much grease can attract dirt and debris, leading to more wear and tear over time.

  8. Inspect Again: After everything’s greased and running smoothly, give the cables a second look. Listen for any signs of wear, and make sure the lift is operating smoothly without any strange noises.

Why This Is So Important

As someone who has been in the business for many years, I can tell you that greasing your boat lift cables is one of the most important steps you can take to extend the life of your lift. The cables are what support your boat, so taking a few minutes to properly grease them helps reduce wear, prevent rust and corrosion, and ensures that your lift will operate smoothly for years to come.

Remember, when you properly grease the cables, you reduce friction, which helps them run smoother and last longer. This is especially important in Michigan’s fluctuating weather conditions, where moisture and temperature changes can cause issues if the cables aren’t properly maintained.
